I’ll never forget watching my son Chance do his little “itchy dance.” It was this heartbreaking wiggle he’d do to stop himself from scratching the painful bumps covering his legs. No parent should have to watch their child suffer like that. We tried everything we could think of, yet the eczema always came back — red, raised, and so itchy that he scratched until he bled.
After years of failed treatments, what finally helped him wasn’t a prescription, a special diet, or a doctor’s visit. It was pure goat milk soap. And the change it made in his life still amazes me.
The Daily Battle Against Eczema
Chance’s eczema started as small, irritated patches, but it quickly turned into a constant battle. His skin was extremely dry and sensitive. The itching wasn’t just annoying — it controlled his life.
He struggled to focus in school because the urge to scratch was nonstop. Other kids made comments about his skin, and he became more self-conscious. Even though Chance tried to be tough and rarely complained, the pain was obvious. Watching him do that little dance to fight the itch broke our hearts every single time.
We tried adjusting his diet. We bought lotions, creams, and special soaps. Some burned his already raw skin. Baths left him drier than before. Nothing brought long-lasting relief.
The Oatmeal Bath That Gave Us Hope
One day we added oatmeal to his bath, hoping the natural fats would lock in moisture. And for a moment, it worked. His skin softened, the redness faded, and he finally looked comfortable.
But within hours, the eczema returned. The itching came roaring back, worse than before. The oatmeal made a mess, and the relief it provided didn’t last long at all.
Still, that small bit of improvement was enough to give us hope. If something natural helped — even temporarily — maybe we were on the right path.
The Research That Changed Everything
That tiny breakthrough pushed us to dig deeper. We soon discovered something shocking: most soaps, bubble baths, and lotions we had been using were full of harsh chemicals and artificial ingredients. These products weren’t helping Chance — they were irritating his already sensitive skin.
Then we started researching goat milk. Since our family already drank fresh milk from our goats, we were surprised to learn how beneficial goat milk is for the skin. It contains vitamins, minerals, and natural exfoliants that support the skin’s healing process.
But when we looked for goat milk soaps to buy, we ran into problem after problem. Many “goat milk soaps” weren’t made with fresh milk. Some used powdered bases. Others contained only a tiny amount of goat milk. Many were mixed with low-quality oils or chemical fillers.
Nothing felt safe or trustworthy enough for Chance’s damaged skin.
When Nothing Worked, We Made Our Own
That’s when my husband, Dwight, decided to take matters into his own hands. In 2011, he made our very first batch of Oatmeal & Honey Goat Milk Soap using fresh milk from our goats and high-quality oils like coconut, olive, and red palm. No chemicals. No shortcuts. No unknown ingredients.
We decided to try something new: we added the soap to Chance’s bathwater to create a gentle “milk bath.”
The change was almost immediate.
Within a couple of days, his itching faded. The red patches started to soften. After two weeks, his eczema was completely gone. For the first time in years, he slept without scratching. He played without pain. He went to school without feeling embarrassed.
We kept giving him goat milk baths twice a day because the more he soaked, the better his skin looked. His confidence, energy, and smile came back — something we hadn’t seen in so long.
Why Goat Milk Soap Made Such a Difference
We learned very quickly that not all goat milk soaps are created equal. Fresh goat milk alone isn’t the magic — it’s the combination of:
- Fresh, nutrient-rich goat milk
- High-quality oils that moisturize without irritation
- A soap made from scratch instead of premade bases
Goat milk is naturally moisturizing, gently exfoliating, and packed with vitamins that support healthy skin. When combined with nourishing oils and no harsh additives, it works with the skin — not against it.
Commercial soaps, even ones labeled for sensitive skin, often contain chemicals that strip away the skin’s protective barrier. Pure goat milk soap does the opposite. It supports the skin’s natural ability to heal.
From Our Family’s Struggle to a Mission of Helping Others
Chance’s eczema never returned. Our family switched completely to natural goat milk soap products, and what started as a desperate search for relief turned into something much bigger — Bend Soap Company.
We know what it feels like to try product after product with no results. We know the frustration of creams that burn, prescriptions that don’t work, and advice that leads nowhere. We lived that life for years.
That’s why we started Bend Soap Company — to help families like ours finally find something that brings comfort, confidence, and peace back into their homes.
